ABSTRACT
Since 2015 was widely considered a milestone year for energy storage, batteries are expected to continue to gain momentum as technology prices continue to fall. Romania committed to play a role in the development of energy storage through the new ROManian Energy Storage Technologies (ROM-EST) laboratory, sited inside the National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenics and Isotopic Technologies, Ramnicu Valcea, which integrates a complete solution for lithium batteries production and testing. Based on this new approach, various cell shapes (cylindrical, pouch and coin cells) are manufactured assembled using the new ROM-EST infrastructure. The combination of characterization and battery testing laboratories available in the new Battery R&D Production line provides further opportunities for the development of new battery chemistries from concept to fully proven batteries. The only facility in Romania, capable of fabricating the industry standard 18650 lithium-ion cells and pouch cells, ROM-EST Centre is focused on identifying and demonstrating battery chemistries with higher energy densities, improved safety and reduction of processing technologies costs. Taking into consideration the wide range of lithium-ion batteries (cylindrical - 18650 and pouch cells) applications, and the new ROM-EST infrastructure, we believe that a protocol describing the Li-ion battery manufacturing process it is beneficial and will help other new researchers in the lithium-ion batteries field. Thus, a description of the main protocol describing the manufacturing process of a lithium-ion battery – 18650 is presented. Finally, results and suggestions for future work are proposed.
