ABSTRACT

A potential fire in a nuclear power plant can seriously affect the overall safety. Because of that, the fire evaluation methodologies and the fire modeling applications are continuously developed in fire protection research programs. U.S. NRC elaborated a fire evaluation methodology, PIRT (Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table). The objective of PIRT fire methodology is to identify the key phenomena associated with the intended application and then to rank the current state of knowledge relative to each identified phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to conduct a PIRT investigation of fire as a potential threat to the safety of a CANDU-6 NPP (nuclear power plant), in particular for the EPS (Emergency Power System). This PIRT evaluation comprises a qualitative description of ignition mechanisms and factors affecting the growth of the fire (detection, alarm and extinguishing systems), the estimation of fire frequency, and finally, the effect of an EPS fire on the safety of a CANDU NPP.
