CURRENT STATUS ON THE MODIFIED ZEOLITES APPLICATION IN WASTEWATER DEPPOLUTION

ABSTRACT

Purification of municipal and industrial wastewaters is a necessity of our society. Due to the increasing diversity and resistance of the pollutants, their removal by conventional methods for maintaining water quality became more and more difficult. There are strict rules recommended by "Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC” (WFD), regarding monitoring of different cations and volatile organic compounds in the wastewater.

One of the most promising methods for wastewater recovery is the use of modified zeolites for removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from water.

The present paper reviews the main methods for modifying zeolites and their applications in depollution of wastewaters. Studying modified zeolites properties and their actions on wastewater it can be identified the most appropriate zeolites type for a specific type of pollutant.

Based on the remarkable selectivity of modified zeolites in: ionic exchange, adsorption and catalytic processes, they are used in depollution of wastewaters, even for radioactive liquid wastes. They can be a solution for sewage of industrial estate Govora Platform, where our institute is located. Removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and radioactive substances are of primary interest for these wastewaters.
