EXPLORATION OF NATURAL GASES AND ITS IMPACT TO AIR QUALITY. A CASE STUDY ON SHALE GAS

ABSTRACT

The use of fracturing procedure in unconventional exploitation of oil and natural gas from coal, sandstone and shale deposits may create annoyances about the quality of the environment and life through everything that induce impacts on water, soil and air quality. Therefore, in this work we provide an overview of the related influence and implications that shale gas extraction has for air quality. Normally, at the emissions release into the atmosphere governed by established admissibility criteria, the registered concentrations of pollutants are higher in the immediate vicinity of the source and decrease as the distance from the source increases. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are associated with oil and natural gas operation. Particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10 and the carbon oxides (COx), emissions are also worrisome, but are more a local than a regional issue. For this study we focused on a classic exploration cycle of natural gas by the fracturing method, assessing the real impact of this activity to air.
