ABSTRACT
Data included in the Test Certificate which accompanied an existent High Temperature Superconductor coil, delivered by Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., is referring only to the dimensional and safety parameters of the device, and it is not sufficient for sizing an energy storage unit intended to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system for space applications. The paper deals with both theoretical and experimental work carried out in order to characterize the aforementioned HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) coil, as the first step on the way of achieving and validating a HTS SMES ( Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) for the use in spacecraft power systems.
Keywords: magnetic energy storage, high temperature superconducting coil, inductance. __________________________ *Corresponding author: Mariana Iliescu, E-mail: Mariana.Iliescu@icsi.ro, Phone: 0250/732 744, Fax: 0250/732 746
