ABSTRACT

The catalytic isotope exchange water - hydrogen is the most used front-end process within detritiation technologies.

The research in the field of hydrogen isotopes separation has been of interest in the institute for many years, the main aim being the development of detritiation facilities for CANDU and fusion reactors.

There are numerous methods to assess the performance of the catalytic packing which equips the isotopic exchange columns, often making it impossible to compare the results.

This paper presents an analysis performed on a mixed catalytic packing (catalyst and hydrophilic) using two theoretical methods of performance evaluation.

The mixed catalytic packing is structured type and consists of a Pt/C/PTFE catalyst located in an ordered hydrophilic package made by stainless steel.

For modeling the isotopic transfer which takes place in this mixed catalytic packing, there were considered two cases: 1 - the packing is ordered, the catalyst evenly distributed in volume unit without taking into account the distribution geometry and 2- the packing is ordered but the catalyst is uniformly distributed following a particular geometry.

The analysis of theoretical and experimental data highlights how the considered theoretical model affects the values of catalytic packing performance.
