Due to the decrease of fresh water resources, water recovery, reuse, and recycling have gained more interest, requiring an extension of conventional wastewater treatment technologies. This study aims to outline the membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology for wastewater treatment and, also, its advantages and disadvantages over conventional suspended growth-based biotreatment. There are presented key process design and operating parameters, highlighting their significance. Although this technology penetrated on the market, there still is a lack of understanding of the key process constraints, including membrane channel clogging or membrane cleaning.
