ABSTRACT

Icons and paintings have an historic and personal significance, so that their preservation and restauration is an important part of keeping our cultural heritage. In our country the paintings have been rarely studied through modern chemical techniques and therefore very few information is available on the material used by the painter and restaurators. This paper details the preparation and gas-chromatography/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis procedures for the identification of organic compounds in paintings.

KEYWORDS: icon, painting, GC/MS, organic compunds.
